Position description

BIC seeks an Associate with experience in child rights and child protection and an interest in International Financial Institutions (IFIs) to support BIC’s work on World Bank projects and policies that impact children. This person will work as part of BIC’s Child Rights team, focused on the impact of MDB financing on children. We are looking for a smart, proactive individual with excellent research, writing, communication, and project management skills. Under the direction of the Child Rights Campaign Manager, the Associate will support the child rights team in pushing for advancements in child safeguarding (including child sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment), child labor, and child protection at the World Bank and other MDBs. The primary role of the Associate will be to review World Bank project documents and work with civil society groups in the Global South to monitor World Bank projects, as well as potentially projects financed by other MDBs. The Associate will also work with other CSOs advocating on child rights issues at the MDBs.

Strong preference for candidates that are legally allowed to work in the United States and are based in Washington DC or willing to relocate to Washington DC.

Primary Responsibilities

• Review World Bank project documents for inclusion of children, measures related to children’s issues and potential harms to children, and other priorities relevant to BIC’s child rights work
• Identify and work closely with partners across the world to monitor World Bank funded projects
• Conduct advocacy with the World Bank and other IFIs based on findings of project monitoring
• Monitor World Bank policy, guidance, strategies, and frameworks relating to child rights, child labor, child protection, and other sectors as relevant
• Draft blog posts and edit reports written by partners related to BIC’s Child Rights Campaign
• Participate in field visits to selected countries where projects are being monitored
• Ability and willingness to support with administrative tasks as needed

Qualifications and skills

• A minimum of 2-5 years of experience working in the non-profit sector
• Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline such as (but not limited to) Political Science, Law, Social Science, International Development, Regional Studies, Economics, or Environmental Studies required. Advanced degree in a relevant discipline preferred
• Experience on child rights, child protection, or gender-based violence and interest in international development and International Financial Institutions.
• Ability to work with local communities on sensitive issues and translate that information into advocacy at the national and international level
• Ability to conduct research independently
• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple ongoing projects simultaneously
• Good oral and written communication skills
• Fluent English. Additional language proficiency in Spanish, French, or Portuguese is preferred
• Experience with the World Bank or other MDB advocacy is preferred but not required, BIC will provide training and support in this area
• Ability to adapt to change and receptiveness to feedback

Compensation and Benefits

Salary between $35,000-$60,000 USD per year depending on qualifications, years of experience, and work location. BIC also provides paid health insurance, generous leave and other benefits.
