"Terrorists are not merely criminals. They are unlawful enemy combatants. And when captured overseas, they should be treated like the terrorists they are ," Trump said during his speech.
He said that in the past, the US has foolishly released hundreds of prisoners and cited ISIS founder Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi as an example.
"In the past, we have foolishly released hundreds of dangerous terrorists only to meet them again on the battlefield," Trump said.
Former US President Barack Obama during his tenure, wanted to close the detention site as soon as practicable.
The facility has been in use since the 9/11 US attack.
Though it has detained more than 700 people ever since 2002, the present inmate count is a little over 40.
Guantanamo Bay, a dreaded prison, has always riled human rights groups and activists, who have urged the US government to close the facility.
According to reports, a lot of the detainees were sent there without proper reason and investigation.
