Saudi Arabia has executed two Bangladeshi nationals for allegedly committing an “immoral act” inside a mosque in Makkah, media reports said.
The Bangladesh Consulate General in Jeddah said it had not been informed of the executions in advance and had formally sought acknowledgement from Saudi authorities, The Daily Star reported.
“The consulate was not notified by the Ministry beforehand,” a mission official told The Daily Star via WhatsApp on Friday.
“In this regard, we have submitted a note verbale to the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, requesting formal acknowledgement of the matter,” the official added.
A statement issued by Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Interior, as quoted by Ajel News, identified the two Bangladeshi nationals as Nazerul Islam Abdul Basir and Siti Akhtar.
According to the statement, security authorities apprehended the pair following the incident. After an investigation, they were formally charged, and the case was referred to a court.
The verdict was subsequently upheld by the relevant authorities, and a royal order was issued for the execution of the sentence, the news portal reported, citing the statement.
The executions were carried out on October 14.
