Stockholm: A prosecutor in Sweden has refused to press charges against those involved in the burning of a Quran, saying the act in itself is not illegal.
According to reports, chamber prosecutor Sofia Syrén said it is not possible to prove a crime was committed by those who were charged with burning the Quran.
Quran, the Islamic holy book, was burnt by protesters in Malmo in the month of August.
Over 300 agitators set fire to tyres and threw stones at policemen during the protests.
The demonstration began after anti-Muslim Danish leader Rasmus Paludan was barred from attending an anti-Islam rally.
It also led to a two-year ban on Paludan, leader of Hard Line, a Danish anti-immigration party.
Speaking about the judgement, Syren said the prosecution has looked at everything, including how people expressed themselves.
"From the material, it appears that there were people who expressed themselves in a way that may be judged as incitement against ethnic groups, but these cannot be identified," Syren told national broadcaster SVT.
