A man was killed and more than a dozen others were injured after a speeding mini-truck rammed into a procession taken out by the local Christian community to observe Easter in Pakistan’s Gujrat region, according to media reports.
The incident occurred in front of a church on the Alipur Chatha–Gujranwala road within the jurisdiction of Ahmed Nagar police station in Wazirabad district, Dawn News reported.
A large number of people from the local Christian community had gathered for the procession when the speeding mini-truck—reportedly carrying chickens—ploughed into the crowd.
Preliminary reports suggest that the driver lost control of the vehicle before crashing into the procession.
According to local administration sources and Rescue 1122 officials, those with minor injuries were given first aid at the scene, while around 15 to 20 injured persons were shifted to Gujranwala Medical College Teaching Hospital for further treatment.
The deceased has been identified as Irfan.
Police teams rushed to the spot and arrested one of the crew members, while the driver fled the scene.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
