In his strong-worded message, Modi said violence has no place in democracy.

"Relieved to learn that President Trump, the First Lady and Vice President are safe and unharmed following the recent security incident at a Washington DC hotel. I extend my best wishes for their continued safety and well-being. Violence has no place in a democracy and must be unequivocally condemned," he said.

Australia PM Anthony Albanese wrote on X: "I am pleased to hear the President and the First Lady, along with all attendees at the White House Correspondents' Dinner, are safe."

He further said: "We applaud the work of the Secret Service and law enforcement agencies for their swift action."

Canadian PM Mark Carney condemned the incident and said 'political violence' has no place in a democracy.

"I am relieved that the President, the First Lady, and all guests are safe following reports of gunfire at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington tonight," he said.

A 31-year-old man, identified by multiple media outlets as Cole Thomas Allen, has been taken into custody following a shooting incident outside the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner in Washington, DC.

The event was attended by US President Donald Trump and the first lady.

Stopped at the security checkpoint before entering venue

The incident unfolded outside the Washington Hilton, where the dinner was being held.

Investigators said the suspect was intercepted at a security checkpoint before he could reach the ballroom, where nearly 2,500 guests were present.

Law enforcement officials confirmed that officers engaged the suspect after he attempted to push through security.

Exchange of fire, officer injured

According to authorities, the suspect was armed with multiple weapons, including a shotgun, handgun, and knives.

During the confrontation, gunfire was exchanged.

A US Secret Service officer was struck but survived due to a bulletproof vest and is reported to be in stable condition.

Suspect believed to be acting alone

Officials said the suspect was not injured during the exchange and is believed to be a lone actor. He was taken into custody and later transported to a hospital for evaluation. Authorities are continuing to investigate his motive.

Online profiles suggest Allen is based in California and has a background in mechanical engineering and computer science.

He is reported to have studied at the California Institute of Technology and worked in engineering roles, as well as in teaching and game development.
