Assault case: Indian-origin man extradited to Canada after arrest in US Indian-origin Man

York Regional Police have said an Indian-origin person was arrested in Texas City in the US in connection with the December 2021 attack on Elnaz Hajtamiri in the City of Richmond Hill.

The arrest was made with York Regional Police Major Crimes Bureau, with the assistance of the United States Marshals Service (USMS), Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the Austin Police Department.

The Indian-origin arrested person was identified as Sukhpreet Singh.

According to a CTV News report, Singh has been extradited to Canada.

Sharing details about the incident that occurred in 2021, police said in a statement: "On December 20, 2021, officers responded to an address in the area of Yonge Street and Bantry Avenue, for reports that a female had been attacked and struck with a frying pan in an underground parking garage. The suspects fled the scene in a vehicle."

Police said Elnaz was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

On August 19, 2025, USMS arrested Sukhpreet Singh.

"On September 30, 2025, he was extradited back to York Region and was charged with Aggravated Assault and Conspiracy to Commit an Indictable Offence. He remains in custody," police said.

Weeks after the attack in Richmond Hill, Hajtamiri was reported to have been abducted.

On January 12, 2022, she was abducted at approximately 8:30 p.m. from a Wasaga Beach residence by three suspects dressed in fake police gear.

"They fled in a white Lexus RX Sport Utility Vehicle. York Regional Police and the OPP continue to investigate this matter," police said.

A $100,000 reward exists for information that will lead to her whereabouts.
