Creator of advanced chatbot ChatGPT testified before a US Senate committee on Tuesday when he called on US lawmakers to regulate artificial intelligence (AI).

Sam Altman is the CEO of OpenAI, the company behind the creation of ChatGPT.

Several AI models have emerged in the market in recent times.

“I do think for a very new technology, we need a new framework," Altman was quoted as saying by judiciary.senate.gov.

"Certainly, companies like ours bear a lot of responsibility for the tools that we put out into the world, but tool users do as well – and also people that will build on top of it between them and the consumer," he said.

"How we want to come up with a liability framework there is a super important question, and we’d love to work together," he said.

He also admitted the impact that AI could have on the economy, including the likelihood that AI technology could replace some jobs, leading to layoffs in certain fields.

"There will be an impact on jobs. We try to be very clear about that," he was quoted as BBC.

Altman told legislators he was worried about the potential impact on democracy, and how AI could be used to send targeted misinformation during elections, the British media reported.
