Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping offered to help find a solution to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war during their meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, the Kremlin confirmed on Sunday.

“During their bilateral meetings, Modi and Xi took a keen interest in the Ukraine settlement and actively offered their good offices to help find a solution,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was quoted as saying by Sputnik.

Putin welcomed their readiness and briefed the two leaders in detail on the situation surrounding the Ukraine conflict, Peskov added.

During his bilateral meeting with Putin on Friday, Modi reiterated that dialogue and diplomacy were the way forward to resolving conflicts.

His remarks assume significance amid the escalation in fighting between Russia and Ukraine in recent weeks.

Modi told Putin that India was ready to contribute to peace efforts and support initiatives aimed at resolving conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy.

According to an official statement issued by the Indian government, the two leaders also exchanged views on key regional and global issues of mutual interest, including conflicts in West Asia and the Black Sea region. The developments have affected maritime trade as well as the safety and security of Indian seafarers.

The meeting was the second between Modi and Putin this year. The two leaders had earlier met in Bishkek on August 31, 2026, on the sidelines of the 26th SCO Summit.

The meeting came days after US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner travelled to Moscow and Kyiv in an effort to restart negotiations and find a path towards ending the long-running war.

Despite the renewed diplomatic push, fighting between Russia and Ukraine continued this week.
