Duda holds 51 percent of the votes, according to an exit poll on Monday.

His opponent, Warsaw mayor Rafal Trzaskowski, has received 49.6 percent votes.

The official results will be out late on Monday.

Meanwhile, Duda thanked his supporters following the first exit poll, which wnt in his favour.

"I want to thank everyone that voted for me," the President said.

If re-elected, Duda's stance against the LGBT community can make things difficult for the latter.

He was heard saying the LGBT ideology was far more destructive than communism, inviting criticism from several corners.

Even with exit polls showing him in second place, Trzaskowski remained upbeat about his chance.

"All we need is to count the votes. The night will be tense but I am certain that when the votes are counted, we will win," he told his supporters on Sunday, as quoted in the media.

While Duda is banking on his rural and eastern part of the city, his opponent is a much preferred candidate in cities and regions close to the German borders, due to his liberal approach and his affinity towards the European Union.
