Is Elon Musk building a flying car? Tesla's new Roadster stuns with rocket thrusters Tesla

Tesla has unveiled its redesigned Roadster, featuring rocket-style thrusters that were demonstrated in a video showing the vehicle leaping over a truck and other vehicles while twisting in mid-air.

Sharing the video of the demonstration, Tesla CEO Elon Musk wrote: “Turns out the future does have flying cars.”

According to reports, the two-seater sports car has been developed in collaboration with SpaceX, Musk’s aerospace company.

Sharing details about the vehicle on X, Gene Munster, managing partner at Tesla investor Deepwater Asset Management, said the Roadster has a top speed of 235 mph (378 kmph). He added that Musk wants to push the speed to half a Mach, or approximately 384 mph (618 kmph), and indicated that production could begin in 2028.

“The Roadster event is the latest example of why Elon can’t wait to bring $TSLA (Tesla) and $SPCX (SpaceX) together,” Munster wrote.

He described the new Roadster as a combination of the engineering expertise of Tesla and SpaceX, adding that Musk aims to push the boundaries of conventional automotive engineering.

“The car’s goal is to break the laws of physics: 0-60 in one second, suck the road for high-G cornering, and 10 thrusters that cause the car to flip. It’s a ridiculous display of engineering,” Munster said.

Tesla fan and investor Sawyer Merritt, who attended the event, also praised the demonstration.

“The hype going into this event was sky-high, yet Tesla somehow managed to exceed expectations. Kudos to all the engineers and designers. That was the most insane product demo I’ve ever seen,” Merritt wrote on X.

“The Roadster looks great in person. Can’t wait to drive it. Thanks @Tesla for the invite, and thanks to everyone for tuning in to my content today. Until next time!” he added.

Tesla has yet to announce the price of the redesigned Roadster.

Explaining the technology behind the thrusters, Tesla said on X that SpaceX has used thrusters to position spacecraft for decades. Adapting the technology for a road vehicle, however, required entirely new hardware and control systems.

“Every usable void in the car is packed with Carbon Fiber Overwrapped Pressure Vessels (COPVs). More compressed gas on board = more flight time,” the company said.

The redesigned Roadster's proposed performance figures and thruster-assisted manoeuvres have generated considerable interest, although further details on its final specifications, pricing and production timeline remain to be confirmed.
