At least two Pakistani policemen were killed and another was injured after unidentified gunmen opened fire on them while they were on their way to join a polio vaccination team for security duty in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Mohmand district on Tuesday, media reports said.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Liaquat Ali confirmed the incident to Dawn, saying the attack took place near the Hashim Kor police checkpost in the Dag Tamanzai area of Pindiali tehsil.
The deceased policemen were identified as Constables Zahoor Khan and Arbai Khan.
Governor Faisal Karim Kundi termed the incident “extremely regrettable and condemnable”, according to a statement issued by his office on Tuesday, Dawn reported.
The attack came as a sub-national polio vaccination campaign began across Pakistan on Sunday.
The latest vaccination drive aims to reach 24 million children across 97 high-risk districts.
Pakistan and Afghanistan remain the only two countries in the world where polio is endemic.
