In a post on X, Altman wrote: “ChatGPT Images 2.0 India.”

Praising the response from Indian users, he added: “Already more than 1 billion images created there; awesome to see.”

The milestone underscores India’s rapid adoption of artificial intelligence tools, with OpenAI earlier revealing that the country is now home to more than 100 million weekly ChatGPT users, ranging from students and teachers to developers and entrepreneurs.

The company had announced in April that India has emerged as one of its fastest-growing markets, driven by widespread interest in generative AI applications across education, business, and technology sectors.

Meanwhile, beyond India, OpenAI and the Government of Malta recently announced what they described as the world’s first partnership to roll out ChatGPT Plus access to all Maltese citizens.

In a statement, OpenAI said the initiative aims to provide citizens with access to advanced AI tools while strengthening AI literacy across the country.

“The initiative will provide access to intelligence and empower citizens through an AI literacy course to build practical AI skills and benefit from the technology in their everyday lives,” the company said.

As part of Malta’s “AI for All” initiative, people from all backgrounds will have the opportunity to learn how artificial intelligence can be used responsibly through a course developed by the University of Malta.

The course is designed to help participants understand what AI is, what it can and cannot do, and how to use it responsibly at home and in the workplace.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive one year of ChatGPT Plus access at no cost.

The first phase of the programme is set to launch in May, with the Malta Digital Innovation Authority overseeing distribution to eligible participants.

The initiative will gradually scale up as more Maltese residents and citizens living abroad complete the course, marking a significant step in integrating AI literacy and accessibility at a national level.
