OpenAI has acquired a startup specialising in artificial intelligence tools for voice replication, media reports said.
According to reports, Weights.gg, a company known for developing AI-powered tools to create synthetic voice clones, has been acquired by OpenAI. The terms of the deal have not yet been disclosed.
People familiar with the acquisition told The New York Times that OpenAI purchased both the startup’s intellectual property and its small team of employees.
Weights.gg had reportedly announced the shutdown of its services in March.
The platform functioned as a kind of social network for creating and sharing AI models capable of generating cloned voices through its free consumer application, Replay.
It remains unclear how OpenAI plans to integrate Weights.gg’s technology or what products may emerge from the acquisition.
According to the report, employees of Weights.gg have already been absorbed into different teams across OpenAI. The sources also suggested that the company is unlikely to release a standalone product similar to Weights.gg.
