Moscow (Sputnik/UNI) The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member states condemns the recent statement by US President Donald Trump on the necessity to fully recognize Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Friday.
Trump tweeted on Thursday that the United States should recognize the Golan Heights, disputed between Syria and Israel, a part of Israel, since the territories were of strategic and security importance to the country.
"All shocked by Donald Trump continuing to try to give what is not his to racist Israel: first Al-Quds [and] now Golan," Zarif tweeted while in Turkey at the OIC meeting.
The Golan Heights, located at the Syrian-Israeli border, has been under control of Israel since it captured the area from Damascus during the Six-Day War in 1967. In 1973, another war broke out between Israel and a coalition of Arab states, led by Egypt and Syria.
The recovery of territories that Israel seized in 1967 was one of Syria's objectives in this conflict. Damascus and Tel Aviv signed a disengagement agreement to end hostilities in 1974.
The United Nations Disengagement Observer Force was deployed in the area that same year to help maintain the ceasefire.
While Israel adopted a law that effectively annexed the occupied territory of the Golan Heights in 1981, the international community has not recognized the annexation.
