Banned Lashkar-i-Islam group founder Mufti Munir Shakir was killed in a bomb blast in Pakistan's Peshawar city on Saturday, media reports said.
A statement from the police spokesperson said the incident took place in the vicinity of Urmur Police Station and Mufti Shakir was injured on his left foot in the blast, reported Dawn News.
According to reports, Shakir later died at a hospital where he was taken for treatment.
Special Assistant to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister on Health Ehtesham Ali issued a statement on the matter, saying he was “deeply saddened” to hear of the development, reported Dawn News.
CM Ali Amin Gandapur condemned the blast and asked for a report from authorities on the incident.
He directed authorities to take all measures to nab those behind the blast.
Blast In Mosque
Local media reports said the blast occurred when Mufti Munir Shakir was entering a mosque to offer his prayer.
The entrance of the mosque was damaged in the incident.
Shakir had founded the later proscribed Lashkar-e-Islam in Khyber district over two decades ago.
