Shikarpur, Jan 30 (JEN): At least 33 people were killed and 55 others were injured in an explosion inside a Shia mosque in Pakistan's Sindh province while the weekly Friday prayers were on, media reports said.
The explosion occurred in a central Shia mosque, which is located in Shikarpur's Lakhi Dar area.
"A number of victims were trapped under debris after the roof of the imambargah collapsed due to the intensive blast. Many of the casualties were shifted to hospital in Sukkur and Larkana districts of Sindh," Dawn News reported.
A three day mourning has been announced by Majlis Wahdatul Muslimeen (MWM) central leader Allama Mohammed Amin Shaheedi.
The death toll might rise as the condition of several wounded is said to be critical.
Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon told Dawn that an emergency had been imposed at all hospitals in Shikarpur and surrounding talukas and cities.
Condemning the incident, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan tweeted: "Condemn shameful suicide attack in Shikarpur Imambargah. Govt was given full support to act against all terrorist gps but govt has failed."
This comes even as Pakistan is attempting to implement the National Action Plan to combat and root out terrorism from the South Asian country.
The initiative was started after the brutal Dec 16 attack on Peshawar’s Army Public School last year.
