At least nine people died and 20 others were injured after protests erupted near the US Consulate in Karachi, Pakistan, on Sunday over the reported death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, according to media reports.
The casualties were reported following clashes between security personnel and demonstrators.
According to reports, hundreds of pro-Iran protesters attempted to storm the consulate early Sunday morning, hours after news of Khamenei’s death was confirmed.
Security forces allegedly opened fire to disperse the crowd, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries.

Police surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed told Al Jazeera that at least nine bodies were brought to Karachi’s Civil Hospital. Protests were also reported from other parts of the country.
The unrest comes at a time when US President Donald Trump has publicly praised Pakistan’s leadership, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Speaking to reporters recently about tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, Trump said he would be willing to intervene if necessary. “I would (intervene). But I get along with Pakistan very well,” he said.
He further lauded Pakistan’s leadership, adding that he holds Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the country’s military leadership in high regard. “They have a great Prime Minister, a great general. They have a great leader — two of the people that I really respect a lot. Pakistan is doing terrifically well,” Trump said.
Khamenei’s reported killing
According to Iranian state media, Ali Khamenei was killed in his office early Saturday during coordinated US-Israeli air strikes. The operation was described by US and Israeli officials as part of a broader military campaign aimed at dismantling Iran’s ruling establishment, marking a sharp escalation in regional tensions.
President Donald Trump later announced that American forces had carried out the strike, calling Khamenei “one of the most evil people in history” and urging Iranians to “take back their country.”
