U.S. President Donald Trump has endorsed former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in his independent bid for New York City mayor, while urging voters to reject Democratic front-runner Zohran Mamdani, whom he labelled a “communist” and “a disaster for the city.”
In a lengthy post on Truth Social on Sunday, Trump warned that he would curtail federal funding for New York if Mamdani were to win the mayoral race, claiming the city would face an “economic and social disaster.”
“Economic and Social Disaster should Mamdani win. His principles have been tested for over a thousand years, and never once have they been successful,” Trump wrote.
He added, “I would much rather see a Democrat, who has had a Record of Success, WIN, than a Communist with no experience and a Record of COMPLETE AND TOTAL FAILURE. He was nothing as an Assemblyman, ranked at the bottom of the class and, as Mayor of potentially, again, the Greatest City in the World, HE HAS NO CHANCE to bring it back to its former Glory!”
Trump also took a swipe at Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, saying, “A vote for Curtis Sliwa (who looks much better without the beret!) is a vote for Mamdani.”
Endorsing Cuomo, Trump wrote: “Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice. You must vote for him and hope he does a fantastic job. He is capable of it — Mamdani is not!”
Remember to vote tomorrow in New York!

Bear in mind that a vote for Curtis is really a vote for Mumdumi or whatever his name is.
VOTE CUOMO!
In a separate post on X (formerly Twitter), Trump’s former advisor Elon Musk echoed his support for Cuomo, writing: “Remember to vote tomorrow in New York! Bear in mind that a vote for Curtis is really a vote for Mumdumi — or whatever his name is. VOTE CUOMO!”
Who is Zohran Mamdani?
Zohran Mamdani, 33, is a New York State Assembly member representing parts of Queens and a candidate for New York City mayor. If elected, he would become the first Muslim and first Indian-origin mayor of the city.
The son of Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair, Mamdani is backed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and has campaigned on progressive issues such as affordable housing, policing reform, and climate justice.
Relatively unknown to many city residents until his mayoral bid, Mamdani secured 43.5% of the vote in the Democratic primary in July, ahead of Cuomo’s 36.4%, to become the party’s nominee before Cuomo launched his independent campaign.
