A 'number of people' were killed and several others injured after a driver ploughed his car into the crowd at the Lapu Lapu Day gathering, a street festival, in Canada's Vancouver on Saturday, police said.
"A number of people have been killed and multiple others are injured after a driver drove into a crowd at a street festival at E. 41st Avenue and Fraser shortly after 8 p.m. tonight," Vancouver Police said in a statement posted on X.

The police said the driver has been taken into custody.
The number of casualties in the incident is still not known.
Police rushed to the scene immediately after the incident occurred.
Speaking on the arrest, the police wrote on X: " A 30-year-old suspect, a Vancouver man, was arrested at the scene."
Several children were among those attending the event.
PM Carney Feels Devastated
Carney said he felt devastated hearing about the 'horrific' attack.
"I am devastated to hear about the horrific events at the Lapu Lapu festival in Vancouver earlier this evening," he said.

Carney said his government is monitoring the situation closely.
Mayor Says He Feels Saddened
Mayor of Vancouver Ken Sim said: "I am shocked and deeply saddened by the horrific incident at today’s Lapu Lapu Day event. We will work to provide more information as soon as we can, but at this time @VancouverPD have confirmed that there are a number of fatalities and multiple injuries. Our thoughts are with all those affected and with Vancouver’s Filipino community during this incredibly difficult time"

National Democratic Party candidate Jagmeet Singh, who greeted the festival goers on Sunday, said he felt horrified learning about the incident.

The Vancouver car ramming incident occurred just days before Canada votes in the general elections.
