Waters, who represents the left-wing Greens party, was born in Canada.
She was just 11 months old when she moved to Australia with her parents.
In Australia, one cannot run for federal office if they hold dual or multiple citizenship.
The law dictates one to relinquish any foreign citizenship before running for the office.
Following her announcement, Waters said that it was a honest mistake as she wasn't aware of her dual citizenship status.

Australia witnessed the second resignation in a matter of a week's time relating to the aforementioned clause, as earlier on Friday Scott Ludlam, also a Greens lawmaker, relinquished his post.
