Afghan counter-narcotics police have smashed poppy farms on 200 acres of land in north Afghanistan's Balkh province over the past two months, provincial police chief Abdul Razaq Rashed said on Monday.

During the operations, 200 acres of poppy farms have been destroyed, the officer said, adding that police will not allow anyone to cultivate illegal crops.

Police have also taken into custody 100 people on charge of involvement in drug business over the period, the officer said.

The Afghan caretaker government has banned poppy cultivation, processing and drug trafficking to eliminate drug menace.
