San Salvador: At least twelve people died due to a stampede at a football stadium in El Salvador's capital city San Salvador, media reports said on Sunday.
The incident occurred during a match between local team Alianza and the Santa Ana-based team Fas at Cuscatlán Stadium, reports BBC.
The match was suspended.
President Nayib Bukele described the event as "unprecedented", and said an "exhaustive investigation" would be launched, reports the British media.
According to reports, the incident happened after a large number of people tried to enter the stadium following the closure of the gates.
Officials believe some fans were sold fake tickets.
An investigation into the matter is currently underway.
The President tweeted: "Whoever the culprits are, they will not go unpunished."
La @PNCSV y la @FGR_SV realizarán una investigación exhaustiva de los hechos ocurridos en el Estadio Cuscatlán.
