Ottawa: Canadian PM Justin Trudeau has launched legislation to further strengthen gun control in the nation and keep Canadians safe from gun violence.
Bill C-21 puts forward some of the strongest gun control measures in over 40 years, read a statement issued by the Canadian PM website.
“One Canadian killed by gun violence is one too many. I’ve seen all too well the tragic cost that gun violence has in our communities across the country," Trudeau was quoted as saying.
"Today, we’re proposing some of the strongest measures in Canadian history to keep guns out of our communities and build a safer future for everyone," Trudeau said.
The announcement comes in the wake of two recent shootings in the US -- a teen shot dead 19 children and two teachers at an elementary school in Texas and racist shooting in New York's Buffalo that killed 10 people.
Ending gun violence had been a part of Trudeau's campaign in the 2019 election and the next year his government banned over 1,500 types of military-style assault weapons after the country witnessed its deadliest gun rampage that killed 22 people.
