Shortly after Iraq's Security Media cell claimed Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi's residence in the capital, Baghdad, was hit by a "booby-trapped drone" amid escalating political tensions, the US State Department released a statement condemning the alleged assassination attempt and offering to assist the probe into the incident.

"We are following the reported drone attack targeting the residence of Iraqi Prime Minister Kadhimi, and we are relieved to learn the Prime Minister was unharmed," according to the statement.

"This apparent act of terrorism, which we strongly condemn, was directed at the heart of the Iraqi state," State Department spokesman Ned Price said in the statement.

"We are in close touch with the Iraqi security forces charged with upholding Iraq’s sovereignty and independence and have offered our assistance as they investigate this attack," the statement read.

"Our commitment to our Iraqi partners is unshakeable," it added. "The United States stands with the government and people of Iraq."

Earlier, Iraq's security forces said Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi survived an "assassination attempt" after his Baghdad residence was targeted by a drone laden with explosives and rockets on Sunday, though at least six of his bodyguards were reportedly injured in the attack.

Kadhimi later appeared on Iraqi television and confirmed that he had escaped the attack unhurt.

"My house was the target of a cowardly attack. Thanks to God that I and those who work with me are in good shape," Mustafa al-Kadhimi said.

"Our heroic security and army forces are working on protecting Iraq and its stability," the Prime Minister said.

"Cowardly rockets and cowardly drones do not build countries or futures. We are working to build our homeland by respecting the state and its institutions, and by building a better future for all Iraqis," Kadhimi added.

The early morning drone attack targeting the Prime Minister's residence in Baghdad's fortified Green Zone came after deadly protests in the Iraqi capital over the result of a general election on October 10.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for Sunday's attack which has been called an "assassination attempt" by the Iraqi government.

The Turkish foreign ministry in a statement also called the incident a "terrorist attack" and condemned the drone-strike on the Iraqi Prime Minister's residence "in the strongest terms".

"We hope that the perpetrators of this cowardly terror attack, which clearly aims to undermine the sovereignty and stability of Iraq, would be identified and held accountable before law as soon as possible," the statement from Turkey read.

"Turkey will continue to stand in solidarity with the Iraqi people and state in their fight against terrorism, irrespective of its origin," according to the statement.

Condemning the "assassination attempt", the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) has encouraged all sides to take responsibility for de-escalation and to engage in dialogue to ease political tensions, upholding the national interest of Iraq.

"Terrorism, violence and unlawful acts must not be allowed to undermine Iraq's stability and derail its democratic process," the UNAMI said in a statement.
