Dhaka: At least 18 people were killed in lighting strikes within four hours across six districts in Bangladesh. Of these, nine were in Netrokona, four in Faridpur, two in Manikganj and one each in Sunamganj, Kishoreganj and Mymensingh districts. The incidents took place on Tuesday (May 18).
It is learned that nine people were killed in a lightning strike while working in Haor in four upazilas of Netrokona. Among them, two died in Kendua Upazila, two in Madan, four in Khaliajuri and one in Purbadhala.
Besides, five people were injured in Khaliajuri and four in Madan. The incident took place at 2:45 pm on Tuesday.
The deceased have been identified as Md. Bayazid Mia (42), Md. Fazlur Rahman (55), Asek Mia (32), Bipul Mia (27), Monir Hossain, Hafeez Md. Sharif (18), Atabur Rahman (19). Junaid (8) and naval worker Bachan Mia (22).
Meanwhile, a schoolboy and a worker were killed in a lightning strike while cutting paddy in Pauli area of the municipality on Tuesday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Asif (15) and Azmat Ali (50). The condition of one of the injured, identified as Anik, is critical. He has been sent to Dhaka for advanced treatment.
Four people, including a woman, were killed in a lightning strike in Faridpur district. The incident took place between 4 pm and 5:30 pm in West Gangavardi of Faridpur Municipality, Mollah Dangi Mahalla of Ward No. 5, North Channel of Sadar Upazila and Chandpur of Madhukhali Upazila.
Anwara Begum (45) was killed in a lightning strike in Molladangi mahalla of ward 11 of Faridpur municipality at around 4:30 pm while returning home with paddy.
Meanwhile, farmer Kabir Mollah (48) was killed in a lightning strike at West Gangabardi Mohalla in Faridpur Municipality's Ward 5 on his way home with paddy at around 4 pm. Besides, a farmer, identified as Dulal Khan (58), died in North Channel Union of Sadar Upazila in a lightning strike in the afternoon. On the other hand, another farmer, Kabir Sheikh (41), was killed by lightning while working in a jute field in Madhukhali upazila.
A young man named Atiqul Islam was killed in a lightning strike while playing football in Mymensingh's Tarakanda upazila. Another was injured.
Another man, identified as Abu Taher (35), was killed in a lightning strike in Sunamganj's Doarabaja upazila.
On the other hand, a teenager, identified as Md. Ariful Islam (17), was killed in a lightning strike at Nikli in Kishoreganj.
