Washington: The US government has said former CIA director Mike Pompeo has been appointed as the country's Secretary of State.
Mike Pompeo was sworn in as the 70th U.S. Secretary of State on Apr 26.
"The Secretary of State, appointed by the President with the advice and consent of the Senate, is the President's chief foreign affairs adviser. The Secretary carries out the President's foreign policies through the State Department, which includes the Foreign Service, Civil Service, and U.S. Agency for International Development," the US State Department said in a statement.
Congratulating the new Secretary of State, US President Donald Trump said in a statement that he's pleased with the Senate's confirmation of Mike Pompeo.
"He has my trust. He has my support," Trump said.
"The Senate voted 57-42 to approve him as America's top diplomat, the second of the Trump presidency," the BBC reported.
He replaced Rex Tillerson.
He was removed from the post by Trump recently.
US State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert tweeted: "Just spoke with #MikePompeo our 70th Secretary of State, says he’s 'delighted to be Secretary of State, completely humbled by the responsibility and looking forward to getting to work' First stop #nato ministerial."
UK's top diplomat Boris Johnson congratulated Pompeo and tweeted: "Many congratulations to my new US colleague, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Very much look forward to working together on our many common interests and our shared foreign policy challenges."
