US President Joe Biden will meet Afghan leaders - President Ashraf Ghani and chief peacemaker Abdullah Abdulla - at the White House on Friday.
This is the first in-person meeting of Afghan leaders with President Biden ahead of the withdrawal of the remaining US troops by September.
The drawdown is in accordance with Biden's direction to close what he has termed the "forever war".
The president "looks forward to welcoming" the Afghan leaders, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said, adding that President Biden will reassure the Afghan leaders of US diplomatic, economic and humanitarian support for the the strife-ridden country even as the US forces continue to move out of the country, said a Voice of America report.
Ghani and Abdullah have arrived in Washington on Thursday and met Senate leaders Chuck Schumer and Mitch McConnell, the report informed
“The visit by President Ghani and Dr. Abdullah will highlight the enduring partnership between the United States and Afghanistan as the military drawdown continues,” Psaki said, the report stated.
