The unusual "teacher" uniting China and Japan with adult fun

Beijing: China and Japan have a longstanding feud over the latter's brutality during the Second World War, but when it comes to Sora Aoi, both nations seem to agree.

Sora Aoi is a Japanese adult movie actress, who is hugely popular in China.

According to some Chinese citizen, Sora is a teacher.

"To many Chinese men who couldn't get proper sexual education in their adolescence, Sora Aoi became our teacher," BBC quoted a Chinese commentator as saying.

So when Sora broke her news of engagement on Weibo, the Chinese version of the Twitter, the post received over 170,000 comments and 830,000 likes within 48 hours.

Why is Sora so popular in China?

Sora's popularity in China has been deemed as paradoxical. For a start, Sora is Japanese, and most Chinese have a bitter feeling towards their Japanese counterparts.

The two Asian nations are still fighting over group of contested islands known to China as the Diaoyu and to Japan as the Senkaku Islands.

However, a popular saying in China's internet goes: "Diaoyu Islands belong to China, and Sora Aoi belongs to the world."

Sora started her career in the early 2000's and till she retired in 2011, the actress is said to have starred in over 90 adult films.

According to Prof Wai-ming Ng from Chinese University of Hong Kong's Department of Japanese Studies, she chose the right time to rise in China.

"When she became popular in the country, China was opening up to the outside world in various ways, including in terms of sexuality," the professor said.

The other factor that seemed to have worked for Sora is her own acceptance of her job.

While most Asian nations take a back seat when it comes to sex, Sora displayed it in abundance.

"For people who like Sora Aoi, no matter which country they are from, they would all feel like they belong to the same group," Professor Wai-ming added.
