Covid-19 killed 122 Sri Lankan migrant workers

The Covid-19 pandemic has hit every section of society; however, migrant workers remain even more vulnerable as they often struggle to access health care facilities abroad. About 122 Sri Lankan migrant workers died due to the Covid-19, according to a report in Economynext.

 

A total of 56,403 people returned to the island nation since the Covid-19 pandemic, said Sri Lankan Labour Minister Siripala De Silva while responding to a question in parliament. Among them, 30,832 people came back as they lost their jobs, the minister told parliament.

Among the dead, 36 were from Saudi Arabia, 36 from Kuwait, 24 UAE, 9 Qatar, 7 Oman, 4 Lebanon, 3 Jordan, 2 Bahrain, and one from Israel.

He also informed 4431 Sri Lankan workers contracted the virus abroad, with the highest cases reported from Qatar where around 1792 workers found infected with the Covid-19.
