Kabul/JEN: The Islamic State (IS) terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the latest rocket attack that targeted the ongoing US evacuation at Hamid Karzai International Airport (HKIA) in Kabul on Monday morning, reports said.

According to American non-governmental counter-terrorism threat intelligence organization, SITE intelligence group, the IS branch, known as Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP), claimed that it had launched six unguided rockets at the airport where the US is ramping up evacuation efforts as the August 31 deadline is just a day away.

The terrorist organization, which had earlier claimed responsibility for the deadly twin blasts near Kabul airport that claimed nearly 200 lives last week, did not elaborate whether the rockets had actually scored any hits, the SITE intel group said.

Earlier in the morning, local Afghan news sources as well international news outlets, citing US and local officials, reported that multiple rockets had been fired from a car toward Kabul airport and at least five of those rockets were intercepted by the facility's C-RAM (Counter Rocket, Artillery and Mortar) missile defense system.

Confirming the attack, the White House later stated that the incident had not interrupted the US evacuation process.

"National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and Chief of Staff Ron Klain have briefed the President on the rocket attack at Hamid Karzai International Airport.

"The President was informed that operations continue uninterrupted at HKIA, and has reconfirmed his order that commanders redouble their efforts to prioritize doing whatever is necessary to protect our forces on the ground," a statement by the White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki read.
