Lombok quake death toll rises to 131; Red Cross says 'exceptionally destructive'

Jakarta: The toll in quake-hit Lombok region in Indonesia has touched 131, reports said.

However, according to local new outlets, the figure has crossed 300.

The 6.9 magnitude earthquake, which struck the nation on Sunday, has been termed as 'exceptionally destructive' by the Red Cross, an international aid organisation.

Apart from the deceased, at least 1,400 people have sustained injuries, while a staggering 156,000 people have been rendered homeless.

The figures are expected to rise, officials said.

According to aid workers, some parts of Lombok are yet to receive aid.

Aftershocks have also exacerbated the cause, more than 340 of which have been felt since Sunday.

The calamity has also partially shut down Lombok's booming tourist business.

Several hotel owners have reported the rise in hotel booking cancellation, while some have said that Lombok may not see any more guests this season.
