Syrian state media says foreign missiles shot down near airbase

Damascus: Syrian state media said on Tuesday that the country's air defence has shot down foreign missiles near an airbase.

The missiles were intercepted near Shayrat airbase in Homs, late on Monday.

It took place just days after a coordinated strike against Syria by the US, the UK and France.

Meanwhile, Hezbollah, a Lebanese Islamist political party harbouring pro-Iranian sentiments, said that the Syrian air defence intercepted three missiles targeting Dumair military airport, north-east of Damascus.

US however has said that it had no role in the new attempted attack.

A Pentagon spokesperson told Reuters news agency that "there were no U.S. military activity in that area at this time."

Israel too has ruled out its involvement.

"We don’t comment on such reports," an Israeli spokesperson told Reuters.

Both Israel and the US in the past have attacked Syrian air bases and facilities.

The US had attacked the Shayrat air base last year, in response to a chemical attack, which killed at least 70 people, including children.
