The Indian Navy's maritime defence capabilities received a boost on Thursday with the delivery of Amini, an indigenously built Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC), developed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata.

The vessel is part of India's efforts to strengthen its indigenous naval shipbuilding capabilities and enhance its preparedness against underwater threats.

The ASW SWCs designed and constructed by GRSE adhere to the classification rules of the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS).

Key features of Amini

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Defence, these vessels are among the largest Indian naval warships propelled by waterjets.

They are equipped with advanced lightweight torpedoes, indigenous rocket launchers and sonar systems, enabling them to effectively detect and engage underwater threats.

The addition of Amini will further strengthen the Indian Navy's anti-submarine warfare capabilities, coastal surveillance operations and mine-laying capabilities.

Significance of the name Amini

The vessel derives its name from Amini Island in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep.

It also carries forward the legacy of the erstwhile INS Amini, a Petya III-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Corvette that was decommissioned in 2002. The new vessel thus continues the Indian Navy's tradition of preserving distinguished names from its naval history.

Boost to Aatmanirbhar Bharat

The delivery of Amini marks another significant milestone in the Indian Navy's pursuit of indigenous shipbuilding, in line with the government's vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

With more than 80% indigenous content, the vessel highlights the growing capabilities of India's domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem and the country's efforts to reduce dependence on imported defence equipment.
