The Indian government has completed preparations for ‘Census of India 2027’, and this massive exercise is set to commence in Karnataka soon.

This will be the 16th Census in the series since 1872 and the 8th Census since Independence.

"Considered one of the world's most complex administrative and statistical tasks, this process is not merely a head count; it serves as a vital pillar providing comprehensive data on the demographic, economic, and social characteristics of the country," read a government statement.

Two Distinct Phases:

The current Census is planned in two distinct phases. In the first phase, the 'House listing and Housing Census (HLO)' will be conducted from April 16, 2026, to May 15, 2026, as per the notification by the Government of Karnataka.

During this stage, information regarding housing conditions, household amenities, and assets will be collected. The second phase, 'Population Enumeration (PE)', will take place in February 2027, where the socio-economic details of every individual will be recorded.

Digital Revolution and Self-Enumeration:

Census 2027 marks a significant milestone as India’s first-ever 'Fully Digital Census.'

Moving away from traditional paper-based methods, enumerators will collect data through specialized mobile applications using the 'Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)' model.

Notably, the public has been provided the opportunity for Self-Enumeration through the dedicated portal "se.census.gov.in."

Citizens of Karnataka can submit their information online themselves from April 1, 2026, to April 15, 2026. Subsequently, enumerators will visit homes to verify this information.

Data Collection and Development:

During the House listing operation, details such as housing characteristics, access to drinking water, electricity, cooking fuel, internet availability, and household assets will be gathered.

This data is essential for Central and State Governments to formulate evidence-based policies, implement welfare schemes, and allocate resources for the development of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and other communities.

Assurance of Confidentiality:

All personal information provided by the public is strictly secure and confidential under the Census Act of 1948. This information will not be shared with any courts or other government departments. Only aggregate statistical data will be published, ensuring that individual identities are never revealed.

Census 2027 will be a major landmark in India’s administrative system by integrating advanced digital technology with robust administrative measures. As the nation's first fully digital census, it reinforces the commitment toward accuracy, transparency, and data security while ensuring the highest standards of privacy.

This information serves as the most authentic basis for data-driven decisions and assists various departments in the effective allocation of resources.

It helps the government and other stakeholders in formulating inclusive policies and achieving steady national development.

The Directorate has urged the public to actively cooperate in this national program, which aims for sustainable development through accuracy, transparency, and data security.
