Australia, Canada and the UK have recognised a Palestinian state, a move strongly criticised by Israel.

In his X post, British PM Keir Starmer said: "Today, to revive the hope of peace for the Palestinians and Israelis, and a two state solution, the United Kingdom formally recognises the State of Palestine."

The recognition is seen as a major step taken to reach the two-state solution.

Taking a similar stance, the Canadian PM Mark Carney wrote on X: " Today, Canada recognises the State of Palestine."

In his statement, Australian PM Anthony Albanese said: "Effective today, Sunday the 21st of September 2025, the Commonwealth of Australia formally recognises the independent and sovereign State of Palestine."

"Australia’s recognition of Palestine today, alongside Canada and the United Kingdom, is part of a co-ordinated international effort to build new momentum for a two-state solution, starting with a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of the hostages taken in the atrocities of October 7, 2023," he said.

Albanese said the act of recognition reflects Australia’s longstanding commitment to a two-state solution.

"The terrorist organisation Hamas must have no role in Palestine," he said.

The three nations announced their decision just ahead of the beginning of the United Nations General Assembly in New York where the focus will remain on recognising Palestine's two-state solution.

There will be no Palestinian state: Netanyahu

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu strongly opposed the stance taken by the three nations and said in a statement: "There will be no Palestinian state. The response to the latest attempt to force upon us a terror state in the heart of our land will be given after my return from the United States."

In his strong response, Netanyahu said: "I have a clear message to those leaders who are recognizing a Palestinian state after the horrendous October 7 massacre: You are rewarding terror with an enormous prize."

He said: "For years I have prevented the creation of that terror state, against tremendous pressure, both domestic and from abroad."

Meanwhile, Hamas has described the initiative as a 'welcome step'.

“Any step to strengthen the legitimate Palestinian rights, foremost among them the fully sovereign Palestinian state with its capital in Jerusalem and the right to self-determination, is a welcomed step,” Basem Naim, a senior member of Hamas’ political office, told CNN .

As per the UN website, on September 22, at the UN Headquarters in New York, a world summit of Heads of State and Government – sponsored by France and Saudi Arabia – will attempt to revive the long-stalled “two-State solution”.
