The two leaders met at the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh on the southern tip of the Sinai peninsula.

Bennett, who received the invitation to visit last month, described the meeting as "very important and very good".

Long-time Israeli president Benjamin Netanyahu had made an official visit to Egypt in 2011, when he met then-President Hosni Mubarak just over a month before he was unseated by a popular uprising.

Egypt was the first Arab country to sign a peace treaty with Israel in 1979, but the bilateral ties between the neighbours have never been warm.

Much had not been known about Bennett's trip to the Sinai Peninsula on Monday for security reasons and it was announced shortly before it started,BBC reported.

In a statement released by his office after the talks, Bennett said they had "created a foundation for deep ties in the future".

"I have just finished a first visit with the President of Egypt. The meeting was very important and very good. During the meeting, first and foremost, we created a foundation for deep ties in the future.

"We discussed a series of issues in the diplomatic, security and economic spheres, as well as ways to deepen ties and strengthen the interests of our countries.

" Israel is increasingly opening up to the countries of the region, and the basis of this longstanding recognition is the peace between Israel and Egypt. Therefore, on both sides we must invest in strengthening this link, and we have done so today."

BBC reported that a spokesman for the Egyptian presidency said Sisi "affirmed Egypt's support for all efforts aimed to achieve a comprehensive peace in the Middle East, based on the two-state solution and in accordance with the international legitimacy resolutions, which contributes to enhancing security and prosperity for all the peoples of the region".
