Washington: Democratic nominee Kamala Harris will be the next US Vice-President and first woman of colour to hold the second topmost post in the Oval Office as Joe Biden won the US presidential elections, US media said on Saturday.

As per CNN, NBA broadcaster and AP news agency, Biden has crossed the 270 electoral votes-mark.

The 56-year-old Harris, will not only be the first woman but also first Indo-African to hold the second topmost post in the country's 200-plus-year history.

The California senator selection opens a new chapter in US polity of woman representation.

She also brings aspirations of non-American in decision making as the former district attorney has roots in India as well as Africa."That I am here tonight is a testament to the dedication of generations before me," Harris said during her Democratic National Convention acceptance speech in August.

Thulasendrapuram village in Tiruvarur district has come alive. Harris's maternal grandfather, Gopalan, hailed from this village.
