Huawei arrest: China warns Canada of “serious consequences”

Beijing: The official mouthpiece of China’s Communist Party on Sunday protested the Canadian government's move of arresting tech giant Huawei's executive Meng Wanzhou over suspicion of fraud involving violations of United States sanctions in Iran, media reports said.

In an editorial published Sunday, the People’s Daily newspaper warned of “serious consequences” should the Canadian authorities fail to immediately release Meng, the chief financial officer of the Chinese electronics giant and daughter of its founder, reported The New York Times.

“By convicting her without trial, the Canadian police have completely disregarded the spirit of the law,” the newspaper quoted the editorial of People’s Daily.

“Is this the way a civilized country should act? How can it not make people furious?” it said.

“Only by correcting its mistake, immediately ending its violation of a Chinese citizen’s lawful and legitimate rights and giving the Chinese people a due explanation can Canada avoid paying a heavy price," read the editorial further.

Meng Wanzhou was arrested in Canada on Dec 1.

She faces extradition to the USA.

According to reports, the Chinese tech giant's chief is facing accused of helping Huawei circumvent US sanctions on Iran.

Meanwhile, as per Xinhua news agency report, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Le Yucheng summoned U.S. Ambassador to China Terry Branstad on Sunday and lodged solemn representations and strong protests against the detention of a senior executive of Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. by the Canadian authorities at the unreasonable behest of the United States.

What the United States has done severely violates Chinese citizen's legitimate rights and interests, and is vile in nature, Xinhua quoted Le as saying in a statement.

China firmly opposes the United States' moves and strongly urges the U.S. side to attach great importance to China's solemn stance, take immediate measures to correct the wrong practices, and withdraw the arrest warrant against the Chinese citizen, he said.

"China will respond further according to the U.S. side's actions," Le added.
