Pakistan: PML-N in dire straits after Islamabad HC disqualifies Khawaja Asif as a member of the parliament

Islamabad: If reports are to be believed, the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) PML-N is staring down a long dark tunnel before the general elections.

After the Pakistan Supreme Court disqualified impeached Prime Minister and PML-N founder Nawaz Sharif from the nation's politics earlier this month, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) dealt another blow to the party- disqualifying Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif as a member of the parliament.

Sharif's sad exit was attributed to his alleged role in the Panama Papers, while IHC ruled Asif unfit to hold a seat for concealing his employment in the Gulf and receiving a monthly payment for his service.

The lawmaker however has said that he will move the country's apex court as he feels hard done by the IHC.

The other looming question is- who will fill his shoes?

Asif is a seasoned politician and with Sharif disallowed to take part in politics any further, the former was the axis the party (hoped to) revolved around. However, with his future in question and no apparent heir in sight, the PML-N has been left high and dry.

However, independent political commentators in the country have said that Asif will have a new role from now on- the king maker.

While the PML-N is offended by the IHC decision, other political parties- the likes of Imran Khan-led PTI- is celebrating the verdict as a victory of truth.
