Washington: US President Donald Trump on Monday congratulated Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on being re-elected as as the President of Egypt.

A statement issued by the White House read: "President Donald J. Trump spoke today with President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi of Egypt. President Trump congratulated President Al Sisi on his reelection."

"The two leaders affirmed the strategic partnership between the United States and Egypt, and noted that they look forward to advancing this partnership and addressing common challenges," read the statement.

Sisi won 97 percent of the votes, official results showed.

He had scored a similar result four years ago, during his maiden stint as Egypt's President.

However, the voter turnout in the recently concluded election was fairly low, with 41 percent of the population opting to exercise their voting rights.

In 2014, voter turnout was 47 percent.

State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert tweeted: "We look forward to continuing to work with #Egypt's President @AlsisiOfficial to advance our strong partnership. We will continue to encourage a broadening of opportunities for political participation for Egyptians and emphasize the importance of the protection of #HumanRights."
