Win Myint succeeds Htin Kyaw as Myanmar President

Naypyidaw: A week after former President Htin Kyaw's resignation, Myanmar Parliament elected Win Myint as his successor, reports said on Wednesday.

The new President has been described as a close aide of State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi.

Myint in the past has been a speaker in the lower house, serving in the position since 2012.

Htin Kyaw, Myanmar's ninth President, and the first to hold the office without having any military ties, resigned last week.

His official Facebook page later stated that the President was stepping down to 'take rest'.

According to reports, the former President has not been keeping well.

The new President, 66-year-old Myint, is a Bamar, Myanmar's majority ethnic group.
