US: Congress passes bill, shutdown ends

Washington: Republicans and Democrats voted for a temporary funding bill that has ended the partial shutdown of the US government, reports said.

The Democratic leadership agreed to back the bill after accepting promises from Republicans for a debate later on the future of young illegal immigrants, BBC reported.

US president Donald Trump has signed the bill on Monday.

Attacking the Democrats, Trump tweeted: "The Democrats are turning down services and security for citizens in favor of services and security for non-citizens. Not good!."

He said: "Democrats have shut down our government in the interests of their far left base. They don’t want to do it but are powerless!"

As the Senate failed to agree on a new budget, the US government on Saturday commenced the move of shutting down many of its services.

Amid disputes over the issues of immigration and border security, a bill to fund the federal government until Feb 16 failed to receive the required 60 votes.
