Kolkata celebrates International Transgender Visibility Day

Kolkata: On Mar 31, scores of trans-people took to the streets in the Indian state of West Bengal to celebrate International Transgender Visibility Day.

The crowd marched from Kolkata's Hazra area to Academy of Fine Arts, a landmark region in the heart of India's former national capital, dancing, singing and celebrating the occasion, all the way.

International Transgender Day of Visibility was first observed in 2009.

The holiday was founded by US-based transgender activist Rachel Crandall.

Crandall had rued the lack of LGBT holidays, celebrating people from the aforementioned community.

The event has since come into observance annually on Mar 31.
