Washington: Scott Pruitt has quit as United States of America's Environmental Protection Agency head, country's President Donald Trump confirmed on Friday.
The US President said he has accepted Pruitt's resignation, while, lauding the latter for performing an 'outstanding job' as the chief of the agency.
"I have accepted the resignation of Scott Pruitt as the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency. Within the Agency Scott has done an outstanding job, and I will always be thankful to him for this," Trump tweeted.
Pruitt's deputy Andrew Wheeler will currently take over as the acting head of the agency.
On Wheeler's appointment, Trump said, "The Senate confirmed Deputy at EPA, Andrew Wheeler, will on Monday assume duties as the acting Administrator of the EPA. I have no doubt that Andy will continue on with our great and lasting EPA agenda. We have made tremendous progress and the future of the EPA is very bright!"
As per a BBC report, since taking office Pruitt has been mired in series of scandals concerning his spending habits and alleged misuse of office.
In a letter directed to President Donald Trump, he blamed "unrelenting attacks" on himself and his family for his decesion to step down, reported BBC.
