Become the DIRECTOR GENERAL of the
International Bamboo and Rattan Organisation (INBAR)

The Board of Trustees of INBAR seeks a Director General to take over the strategic and managerial leadership of the Organisation from 1st April 2019.

Over the past 21 years, INBAR has grown in size and scope from a specialist research network into a rapidly evolving and wide-reaching global development agency. With INBAR’s help, member countries develop their bamboo and rattan industries to meet their Sustainable Development Goals. INBAR is currently undergoing a period of exciting expansion and growth, and a new development roadmap is currently under development.

Headquartered in Beijing, China, INBAR was established in 1997, became Observer to the United Nations General Assembly in 2017, and now counts 44 countries as members.In addition to its Secretariat in China, INBAR has regional offices in Ecuador, Ethiopia, Ghana, and India, with a new office opening in Cameroon in 2019. INBAR is guided by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and plays a key role in South-South Cooperation, including the Belt and Road Initiative;

The successful candidate will assume the leadership of an innovative international organisation working at the forefront of many of the world’s key issues, from climate change to commodity trade to poverty alleviation to affordable housing. She or he will lead an international team who believe in the power of these plants to make the world a better place. Working alongside governments, international organisations, research scientists and farmers, the successful candidate will work to fully exploit the potential of bamboo and rattan to support sustainable development and green economy action plans.

Requirements
An inspiring, dynamc leader with the ability to define goals, execute far-reaching initiatives, and recruit a talented multinational team.
A proven record of accomplishment in multi-cultural organizations working in the Global South;
A passionate advocate for nature-based,solutions to meet sustainable development objectives.
An organizational champion with a proven track record in resource mobilisation, partnership building, project management and stewardship of resources.
A powerful communicator with excellent presentation skills in written and spoken English. Fluency in of Mandarin, and/or one of the other official languages of INBAR: French, or Spanish would be highly desirable; and
The holder of an advanced university degree in a relevant subject area (e.g. forestry, and/or environmental sciences and/or international relations). Experience with bamboo research and development would be highly desirable. 
Initial appointment for this position is for three years, renewable for one additional term. An international competitive salary and benefits package will be commensurate with experience.
