Job Title: Policy Advisor: Caste-Based Discrimination/Discrimination based on Work and Descent

ABOUT THE ROLE
We're hiring a Policy Advisor to support our the work of our Gender, Sexuality and Identity Programme.

The post-holder will be Amnesty International's (AI's) lead expert on the human rights of people who experience discrimination based on work and decent (DWD), with a focus on caste-based discrimination.

As part of building AI's understanding and ability to work on DWD-related issues, the Policy Advisor will lead an internal audit of current AI projects, identifying further work to better mainstream DWD within the organisation. The Policy Advisor will also support the Movement to address DWD across all relevant projects under AI's strategic goals.

The Policy Advisor will research and analyse issues related to the human rights of people who experience DWD in selected countries. Part of this will involve investigating international developments; providing timely, accurate, independent and impartial advice; and contributing to the development of AI's policy positions and advocacy strategies on issues relating to DWD (with consideration of gender, sexuality, and/or other aspects of identity).

The Policy Advisor will also develop contacts and partners in and outside of the organization and represent AI externally.

ABOUT YOU
With specialist knowledge of the human rights of people who experience DWD and caste-based discrimination, you have an in-depth understanding of the key human rights concerns in this area.

You have significant experience undertaking and producing high-quality field research, and have developed short and long-term strategies to achieve human rights impact and solid change. Being a strategic thinker, you exercise good judgement in developing policy positions on the intersection of DWD, disability, gender, sexuality, and other aspects of identity and discrimination.

As an effective communicator and team member, you have strong interpersonal advocacy, negotiating and influencing skills. Fluency in English is essential (both written and oral), while fluency in one or more South Asian language is strongly preferred. Lived experience with caste-based discrimination would be a distinct advantage.

ABOUT THE GENDER, SEXUALITY AND IDENTITY PROGRAMME
The Gender, Sexuality, and Identity Programme (GSI) is responsible for intersectional analysis that captures the complexity of multifaceted identities. This is the combination of gender, sexuality, race, religion, ethnicity, disability, indigenous status and other identities that make up who we are.

GSI identifies the ways that human rights abuses target these multifaceted identities, providing strategic vision and leadership to ensure the organisation has the research, analysis, and campaigning skills to challenge these abuses effectively and advocate for effective redress. GSI also develops policy positions and advocacy strategies to promote international recognition and the notion of dissent as critical to the protection of human rights.
