After US, Guatemala to move embassy to Jerusalem

Guatemala City, Dec 25 (JEN): Last week, Guatemala was one of the nine nations to support America at the UN while the Jerusalem resolution was being passed. On Sunday, its President Jimmy Morales announced on Facebook that the country was moving its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, reiterating its earlier stance.

In a Facebook post, Morales said: "Dear people of Guatemala, today I spoke with the prime minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu. We are talking about the excellent relations that we have had as nations since Guatemala supported the creation of the state of Israel. One of the most important topics was the return of the embassy of Guatemala to Jerusalem. So I inform you that I have instructed the chancellor to initiate the respective coordination so that it may be. God bless you."

The Central American nation became the second country to do so after the US.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump had threatened to cut off aid to the beneficiaries if they voted against America at the UN.

However, defying the threat, 128 nations voted against Trump's decision to name Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
